Even though we face some huge environmental problems, if we all make small lifestyle changes they can have big impact for our planet. Green Living is a monthly series of articles suggesting practical, easy steps we can all do to make sure our beautiful Earth is preserved for our children by Paul Woodhead, Green Party Councillor for Hednesford South on Cannock Chase District Council.
This month our guest contributor local mum Andrea Muckley talks about her passion for real nappies
With almost 3 billion disposable nappies annually going to landfill in the UK it is clear that this is an issue that needs to be addressed. As Real Nappy Week was in April we will today look at reusable nappies.
There are various reasons to #ditchthedisposables: The financial savings (especially as you can use them for subsequent children); The environmental impact (disposables take 400-500 years to decompose); The number of chemicals within disposables; or because the designs are ridiculously cute (there’s even one to celebrate the new royal baby)!
Gone are the days of ugly terry-towel nappies. Today reusables are stylish and generally fit into one of two categories: Two piece nappy cover with insert and all-in-one. With the former the inserts can changed and the covers used a number of times before needing to be washed. The latter look and fit more like a disposable nappy.
These are some top tips to switching to reusables:
1. You don’t need to go all or nothing. One real nappy a day would be one less disposable in landfill.
2. By popping real nappies on a pre wash you can then add your usual washing on a 40 degree cycle. Nappies do not need a 60 degree cycle each time as our washers are generally so efficient.
3. Check to see if you have a nappy library nearby. This way you can try different brands to see which works best for you and your baby’s individual body shape.
4. Check your local council as many provide a real nappy incentive. Dudley, East Staffordshire, Lichfield, Sandwell, Walsall, Wolverhampton all offer £30 cashback. We just need Cannock Chase to catch up!
5. Once you’ve found a nappy brand that works well for you, pick designs that will make you smile!
Now… who wants to talk reusable wipes and hankies? Too soon?
