Green Party Alternative Budget for the People and the Planet

Today Cannock Chase Green Party submitted a request for the cabinet to consider amending their budget proposals at the council meeting next week (20th Feb) reflect the priorities from issues raised by the community and reflect the climate emergency.

The budget process allows the opportunity for those in opposition to submit alternative proposals and ask councillors to refer the budget back to cabinet to include changes before a final submission is made at the following council meeting.

The Green Party have asked for three measures to be considered;

A budget to allow actions to be developed to address the climate emergency including using £1 million from the receipts of the sale of Mill Green for future capital projects directed directly at addressing the climate crisis in the area

A reversal of the unpopular A Board policy demanded by our High Streets and back by cross party councillors

A budget for an organisation to work with communities who are now picking up the delivery of vital public services

Leader of the Green Group on the Council, Paul Woodhead commented

“The current administration has repeatedly demonstrated its arrogance and determination not to listen to the community it is supposed to serve and we are asking them to show some leadership and engage with the will of the people to make small but significant changes for our community.”

Speaking about the need to address the climate emergency Cllr Woodhead said

“We have received repeated warnings about climate change developing in to this crisis we see today. The UN IPCC report in October demanded emergency action by us all within twelve years if we want to avert the catasphrophic impact of climate change to destroy the future of our children and all life on the planet. With a distinct lack of leadership from national government it is up to local government to grab the initiative and Cannock Chase can follow the many other Cities and Districts across the UK taking action for their communities”

Alternative budgets are submitted for consideration at the council meeting of 20th February if referred back to cabinet they meet on the 28th prior to coming back to ask for final agreement of the budget and precepts on 6th March. All meetings are open to the public.

note

The alternative budget process requires that we identify costs to offset a balanced budget. It should be noted that this is an administrative requirement and we are asking for the cabinet to engage with us about the issues and the solutions.
