Pitmen supporter and HTFCSA committee member Paul Woodhead is a Cannock Chase District Councillor for Hednesford and now Chairman of Hednesford Town Council. You will see him around the ground most match days, usually as Pitman Pete and in the Strikers Bar after the game where you can talk to him about any matters or issues of concern.
In these articles I want to bring the role of the councillor alive to you and ensure I am accountable to you as the elected representative for the ward in which the football club resides. This season I will focus on the work of the Town Council in particular. Older residents from across the Hednesford area are invited to the town’s first Silver Sunday event at School Court, Station Road between 4pm and 7.30pm this Sunday (6 October).
Hosted and part funded by donations from Hednesford Town Councillors, the event will feature local singer Tony Hall, raconteur Chrissy Whereat who’ll be discussing her anecdotes and experiences of life in the 1950s and 60s, bingo and cream tea.
Silver Sunday is a nationwide event started by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, designed to celebrate the contribution of older people to society and is part of Hednesford Town Council’s stated aim of addressing social isolation and loneliness in the community.
Open to residents throughout Hednesford, with free transport provided by councillors for those in need, more than 66 of the 80 free tickets have already been snapped up.
Councillor Robin Kingston, is heading up the event. He said: “Silver Sunday is a really worthwhile event that helps to bring older people across the country together. Loneliness is a real issue amongst our older communities, particularly for those with mobility issues and other disabilities who can’t get out and about as easily as they once did.
“I’ve been humbled by the generosity of my fellow councillors who have not only donated their own money to help fund the event but are also donating their time to help make it success. We’ve got some great entertainment planned, not to mention homemade scones for the cream teas, and would love to see as many people as possible joining in with what is sure to be a fantastic get together.”
